Running a business often involves utilizing copyrighted materials (books, articles, online content, databases, etc.). Whether it is copying, storing, digitizing, printing, or sharing them with colleagues, ensure you have the appropriate licence to comply with copyright law.
Copyright Basics:
• Copyright applies regardless of creation method (handwriting, printing, digital format, etc.).
• The medium (paper, hard drive, cloud storage) doesn't affect copyright.
• Copies can be physical or digital (computer hard drive, RAM).
• Authors deserve compensation for the use of their work.

Protect yourself and your organization:
• Legally use copyrighted scientific and technical works.
• Minimize the risk of copyright infringement lawsuits.
• Strengthen your organization's reputation by demonstrating good business practices.
• Gain recognition as a company implementing strong Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

• Creating digital copies: Convert digital works to other digital formats.
• Scanning: Digitize paper documents.
• Printing: Make physical copies from digital works.
• Photocopying: Create paper copies from paper documents.
• Sharing internally: Distribute materials within your company through internal communication channels (Intranet, etc.).
• Presenting to a limited audience: Share works with a restricted group within your company and its branches.
• Archiving: Store digital copies on hard drives or internal repositories accessible to employees.
Does your company utilize scientific or technical works? For tasks like printing, scanning, uploading to the intranet, or archiving, a KOPILEGAL business licence is essential for legal and ethical use.
Why are licences important?
As a non-profit organization, KOPIPOL represents authors and facilitates legal use of their work through licences.
• KOPIPOL grants licences to organizations that use scientific and technical works.
• Fees collected go towards compensating rightsholders (authors).
• This system incentivizes and supports continued scientific progress.

The licence does not impose limits on the number of works copied. However, it should be remembered that the use of the works may only take place if the works coincide with licensee's line of business and are related to internal operation of the enterprise and its branches.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), launched in 2024, introduces uniform EU-wide regulations on sustainability reporting by companies. This replaces the previous Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD).
Who is affected?
• Large businesses
• Small and medium-sized listed companies
The CSRD mandates companies to disclose how they address a broad range of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues:
• Environmental impact
• Social impact
• Human rights practices
• Corporate governance
Reporting requirements are based on common criteria aligned with the EU's sustainability goals, promoting responsible business practices. The CSRD aims to:
• Raise awareness of companies' impact on society and the environment.
• Promote sustainable development within businesses.
Obtaining a KOPILEGAL/BUSINESS licence demonstrates your commitment to several ESG requirements relating to social issues and corporate governance:
• Ensures adherence to copyright and related rights.
• Shows support for the scientific community and fosters innovation.
• Demonstrates your company's commitment to honesty, fairness, and ethical practices.
Encourage your suppliers to adhere to copyright law and acquire necessary licenses, upholding ethical and sustainable business practices throughout your supply chain.
